Whereas, it is expedient to make arrangements for the rational utlization, conservation, management and development of the water resources that are available in the Kingdom of Nepal in the form of surface water, underground water or in whatsoever form.

National Water Plan 2002

In order to implement the activities identified by the WRS, the Water and Energy Commission Secretariat (WECS) started formulating National Water Plan (NWP) in 2002, which was approved by HMGN in September 2005. The NWP recognizes the broad objectives of the WRS and lays down short-, medium- and long-term action plans for the water resources sector, including investments and human resource development.

Realizing the pivotal role of irrigation in increasing agricultural production and productivity, Nepalese farmers have been traditionally investing in development and expansion of their irrigation systems. Since the beginning of lanned development process in the country, His Majesty’s Government has made investments and timely changes in olicies, programs and project. Such past efforts have made substantial improvement in the available irrigation nfrastructures, human resources and institutional built up in the public and private sectors. In the present context, irrigation sector needs to focus on making optimal use of available physical and institutional infrastructures for the expansion of irrigated area round the year.

Hydro Development Policy 2049

No license shall be required to be taken to operate hydroelectric project having a capacity of up to 1000 KW. However, if the project having a capacity of 100 KW to 1000 KW is to be operated, a notice to that effect with necessary particulars should be given.
