No To Bhutan’s Energy Development Model

Posted on 30 January 2009 by editor

By Rabin Subedi

The case of Nepal is, however, different. Most of the projects that have been already signed and others that are under consultation are not similar to Bhutan. Unfortunately, it would be no wonder if these pundits recommend inviting the Indian army for the protection of the projects built by India in the future in the name of security. The obvious fact with Bhutan is that it has already kicked out more than 47 per cent of its citizens who are of ethnic Nepali origin, and that is the best way to increase the per capita income of the people. Geographically also Bhutan is different than Nepal. Bhutan does not have plain land, and does not need water for irrigation and for other purposes.

Hydropower development: getting basics right

Posted on 26 January 2009 by editor

By Ajaya Dixit

We ignore it because we share with all societies at all times the capacity for not seeing what we do not wish to see… But while our failure to notice can be explained, it cannot be excused. ‘Poverty’, William Pitt (British Prime Minister from 1783-1801 and again in 1804 and 1805) exclaimed, ‘is no disgrace but it is damn annoying.’ In the contemporary United States it is not annoying, it is a disgrace

Just a relief of two hours !

Posted on 24 January 2009 by editor

The reduction of load-shedding from 108 hours to 96 hours a week does not bring any substantial change to the lives of Nepalis. After all, power outages have merely been brought down from 16 to 14 hours per day. The two extra hours of power mostly come on in the dead of night, when a majority of the country's inhabitants are already asleep. But still, the very fact that blackouts have decreased, however insignificantly, provides a psychological boost to the nation's citizens, giving a sense that the worst is over

‘Local agents’ behind tardy hydropower development

Posted on 23 January 2009 by editor

The Kaligandaki ‘A’ hydro project started in 1997 and was supposed to generate power by 2001, but construction began four years later in 2004. Similar is the story of Mid-Marsyangdi. The construction of this hydro project began in 2001. It was supposed to start generating electricity within fours years. But after prolonged delay, the project came into operation only at the end of 2008. What these two projects show is just the tip of the iceberg. Hydropower constructions in Nepal are painfully slow. The sluggishness however is not accidental but deliberate. Locals want all of their demands to be addressed when a hydropower project is set up in their locality, Khanal said. “If the project is treated solely as a medium to fulfil all the demands of locals then it is sure that investment in hydropower projects in our country
