PM’s visit and Nepal’s Development

Posted on 01 January 2010 by editor

The recent Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal’s visit to China has brought home some good assurances from the Chinese government. Among others, youth exchange programs between Nepal and China, and MoU for West Seti are significant.

With rise of activities against China in Nepali soil, the number of Nepali visiting China for various purposes has declined in the recent years - the Chinese embassy checking them. Similarly, according to Nepal Tourism Board, number of Chinese tourists visiting Nepal is also low as compared with the past influx.

With the inception of youth exchange programs being monitored by the government authorities of both the countries, Nepalese flow to China and Chinese tourists visiting Nepal would certainly boost up. Such exchange programs are very common in European countries since many things get exchanged during such occasions, not only the skills and experiences.

The next welcoming step is the Memorandum of Understanding between West Seti Hydro and Chinese Government ventured CMEC where the Chinese investors are coming up with 51 percent investment in the ADB-stranded 750 MW West Seti Hydroelectric Project . The Chinese commitment must be a lesson for the Asian Development Bank which played a crucial role in lingering the West Seti project.

If Chinese commitment is seen in action, West Seti would become a mutual project between India, Nepal and China since Chinese are investing in Nepali power project that exports major power to India, an economic rival of China.
