Along with the UCPN-Maoists decision to quit the first republic government, the vision of generating 10,000 MW of hydropower in the next 10 years is getting less attention now-a-days. The Nepali citizens are yet to evaluate the commitment of the UML-led government towards this.
The present Common Minimum Programs signed and forwarded by 22 parties a few weeks back seems bit realistic than the government policies earlier. With some relief of power cut due to the early monsoons, the citizens have started realising that no one can improve the power-supply situation in Nepal until some additional power is generated.
It is a crystal clear that development of hydropower will remain as a major dream for Nepal for another decade, if the government doesn’t start working seriously towards this. The focus must be generating 100 MW of power in a year, rather than trumpeting something beyond the reach.
